Coffeeneuring 2013 Episode 1: Tandem Taimz!

Last night I announced to my husband that I would be taking an early(ish) ride to get coffee because I am participating in Chasing Mailboxes D.C.’s 2013 Coffeeneuring Challenge.

I figured he’d say, “Oh, okay, have fun freezing your tuchas off,” but instead he said, “Okay, but I’m wearing street clothes.”

…Which he did.  Sort of.

This morning we rolled out of bed around 8:45 and headed out on the tandem around 9:15.  We rode all of two miles (!!!) to a favorite local coffee joint, Sister Bean’s.

The Terrific Tandem at Sister Bean's.

Sister Bean’s: because coffee is good for the soul.

Another patron of the Church of the Bean was kind enough to get a couple pictures of us together:

Denis and me at Sister Bean's

Denis (r) and me (l) at Sister Bean’s in our matching Cabal kit (sort of).

As you can see, Denis didn’t exactly make good on his threat about wearing street clothes.  When he saw that I was wearing this particular jersey, he asked, “Isn’t that the one we have a match for?”

And I said, “Indeed it is!”

So he pulled on a cabal jersey over long underwear and wicking baselayer and the stretchy, sparkly jeans that I envy him because I am still not skinny enough to fit in them (getting there, though).

Once inside, we stripped off our seventy-seven layers of headgear and gloves and ordered a mocha, a hot chocolate, a chess bar, and a pumpkin roll.

Our drinks and helmets and stuff.

Helmets – check; balaclavas – check; gloves – check; coffee – check; hot chocolate…

Then we proceeded to enjoy our breakfast tremendously:

Inside Sister Bean's without bike ninja gear.

Us inside Sister Bean’s, without all our bike ninja gear.

…while taking awkward selfies.

Then we rode a WHOLE TWO MILES HOME!!! during which the Tandem did 21 MPH for quite a stretch on the flat.  I was Very Proud of my stoker, who has probably never gone that fast on a bike before in his entire life.

…And a good time was had by all.

Rubber side down, people!

  1. You can still turn stretchy, sparkly jeans into a road cycling must-have. You can make millions!

  2. If it becomes fashionable it wont be ” Unique Denis Style”.
